The transverse proximity effect in the z ∼ 2 Lyman - α forest suggests QSO episodic lifetimes of ∼ 1 Myr

چکیده
We look for signs of the H I transverse proximity effect in the spectra of 130 QSO pairs, most with transverse separations in the plane of the sky of 0.1 – 3 Mpc at z ∼ 2.2. We expected to see a decrease in Lyα forest H I absorption in the spectrum of background QSOs near the position of foreground QSOs. Instead we see no change in the absorption in front of the foreground QSOs, and we see evidence for a 50% increase in the absorption out to 6 Mpc behind the foreground QSOs. Further, we see no change in the H I absorption along the line-of-sight to the foreground QSOs, the normal line-of-sight proximity effect. We may account for the lack of change in the H I absorption if the effect of extra UV photons is cancelled by higher gas density around QSOs. If so, the increase in absorption behind the QSOs then suggests that the higher gas density there is not cancelled by the UV radiation from the QSOs. We can explain our observations if QSOs have had their current UV luminosities for less than approximately a million years, a time scale that has been suggested for accretion disk instabilities and gas depletion.

Quasars near the line of sight towards Q 0302 − 003 and the transverse proximity effect ⋆
We report the discovery of the faint (V ≃ 21.7) quasar QSO 03027−0010 at z = 2.808 in the vicinity of Q 0302−003, one of the few quasars observed with STIS to study intergalactic He absorption. Together with another newly discovered QSO at z = 2.29, there are now 6 QSOs known near the line of sight towards Q 0302−003, of which 4 are located within the redshift region 2.76 < ∼ z < ∼ 3.28 cove...
متن کاملThe Proximity Effect on the Lyman α Forest due to a foreground QSO
The influence of a foreground QSO on the Lyman α forest of another QSO with higher redshift has been investigated by analyzing the spectra of three such objects at redshifts z = 2− 2.7. This influence is not contaminated by any projection effects, as opposed to the inverse effect along the line of sight, where incomplete coverage of the QSO continuum emitting region by the Lyman α clouds could ...
متن کاملMeasuring the Radiative Histories of High-redshift Qsos with the Transverse Proximity Effect
Since the photons that stream from QSOs alter the ionization state of the gas they traverse, any changes to a QSO’s luminosity will produce outward-propagating ionization gradients in the surrounding intergalactic gas. This paper shows that at redshift z ∼ 3 the gradients will alter the gas’s Lyman-α absorption opacity enough to produce a detectable signature in the spectra of faint background ...
متن کاملConstraints on the metagalactic hydrogen ionization rate from the Lyman-α forest opacity
Understanding the sources responsible for reionizing the Universe is a key goal of observational cosmology. A discrepancy has existed between the metagalactic hydrogen ionization rate, ΓHI, predicted by early hydrodynamical simulations of the Lyman-α forest if scaled to appropriate assumptions for the IGM temperature, when compared to values predicted from the proximity effect. We present new e...
متن کاملA Uniform Analysis of the Ly-α Forest at Z = 0− 5: Ii. Measuring the Mean Intensity of the Extragalactic Ionizing Background Using the Proximity Effect
Moderate resolution data for 40 QSOs at z ≈ 2 were combined with spectra of comparable resolution of 59 QSOs with redshifts greater than 1.7 found in the literature to form a large, homogeneous sample of moderate resolution (∼1 Å) QSO spectra. These spectra were presented and the statistics of the Lyman α forest were discussed in Paper I. In this analysis, we demonstrate that a proximity effect...
